Acupuncture treatment

Acupuncture

Fine needles are placed along energy lines to smooth and soothe the flow of blood and qi through the body where blockages have occurred from long term stress or sudden trauma.

There are several types of acupuncture I use:

  • Yuan Qi Acupuncture: a classical system of acupuncture often used for acute and chronic pain
  • Scalp Acupuncture: used for neurological illnesses, pain, trauma, anxiety, addiction and many other applications
  • Eight Principle Acupuncture
  • ESTIM, or electro-stimulation: can be included in a session, where leads of a tens machine are attached to the needles to add additional stimulation to the treatment to facilitate change in the body

Herbal Medicine

Classical Chinese herbal formulations are a primary part of my healing protocol.

When I see you for the first time I take an extensive inventory of symptoms and based on the Six Stages of Disease and the Eight Guiding Principles, I will make my analysis and recommend herbs. You will then take these herbs home and brew them into tea. There is the option of customized instant granulate tea, that dissolves in hot water.

When finished drinking the tea, you will return, and we will reassess the symptom picture. With each change of symptom, small or great, the herbs MUST change to facilitate healing. The herbs are strengthening the body systems and reminding the body how to function in harmony.

Customized Herbal Formulas

Chinese herbal medicine diagnosis and treatment involves an in-depth medical history intake, classical Chinese medicinal diagnosis, and prescription of herbal formulas based on the diagnosis determined through the symptom picture. The intake for herbal prescriptions can be over the phone or in person. The herbal formulas are made to order at our pharmacy and can be picked up or mailed to the patient. An herbal prescription can be taken for a few days or a few months depending on the medical condition being treated. It will need regular modifications, every week to two weeks to adjust the herbs to address the changing symptoms that will occur during the healing process.

Cupping

Cups soothe and loosen tension in muscles and tissues and improve circulation.

Glass, silicon or plastic cups create suction on the body. This helps to soothe and loosen tension in muscles and tissues and improve circulation. This brings vital nutrients and healing to the skin and blood.

This treatment may leave round marks on the skin lasting for up to a week.

I use cupping in many of my treatments, and if you are afraid of needles, cupping is a great alternative to acupuncture. Cupping is beneficial for lymph cleansing, lung and chest congestion and coughing, PMS breast pain, upper, middle and lower back and hip pain, and facelifts!

Cupping is also highly effective for children.

Moxa

Moxa is a warming treatment to prevent illness and promote health! It is used to nourish the body fluids, blood, and qi to support a long life.

Any type of heat applied to the body can increase the flow of qi and blood. Heat lamps, heating pads, or warming liniments all are healing to the body. But the heat combined with the powerful healing properties of the plant Artemesia Argyi/Douglasiana, commonly known as Mugwort, gives moxibustion a proven advantage. Moxa is most often used indirectly by burning a “cigar” rolled of mugwort and held over acupuncture points or local areas.

Moxibustion can be used to prevent diseases and maintain health as part of tonification treatments to help strengthen the organs and immune system. It warms the meridians and expels cold. It can be used to promote circulation over areas of chronic pain or muscle tension. It is especially used for pain that is worse with exposure to cold or damp weather, as with some types of arthritis pain. When applied to acupuncture points that strengthen and lift the qi, moxibustion turn a baby in breach position, boost the immune system and help with fatigue, digestive issues, and much more.

Moxibustion in use

Direct moxa is the application of small rice sized cones of fluffy aged mugwort to particular areas that are considered portals on the body to our source qi. These rice cones are lit with incense, and they burn until you feel a heat sensation at which point they are quickly removed. I generally apply 10 cones but sometimes up to 50 at one to two sites.
